Hi there, I am not from a south asian background, and lamentably I only speak as much Urdu as I've managed to pick up from music and movies...which is not much.

One of my favorite singers, Azam Ali, recently released a new album called Nine Heavens. on it she has a song titled in english "Ishq - Love and the Veil"

I managed to pick out "tere ishq mein" and "kya kya na dekha" and from there found this forum and someone who had posted the complete lyrics:

"Tujhi ko jo yaan jalwa farma na dekha,
Baraabar hai duniya ko dekha na dekha.

Mera ghuncha-e-dil hai woh dil-grifta,
Ke jis ko kaso ne kabhi wa na dekha.

Aziat, musibat, malaamat, balaaen,
Tere ishq mein ham ne kya kya na dekha.

Kiya mujh ko daghon ne sarv-e-chiraghan,
Kabho tu ne aakar tamaasha na dekha.

Taghaful ne tere yeh kuchh din dikhae,
Idhar tu ne lekin na dekha, na dekha.

Hijaab-e-rukh-e-yaar the aap hi ham,
Khuli aankh jab, koi parda na dekha.

Shab-o-roz ai Dard darpai hun uske,
Kaso ne jise yaan samjha na dekha."

which I imagine are traditional (Azam Ali is fond of using Sufi lyrics in her songs)

I can't find an english translation anywhere and I'm completely ignorant as to who the original author may be. I love the song dearly and I can't figure out much beyond "tere ishq mein" means "in your love" and "dekha" is probably something to do with seeing...kya kya na dekha = that which I haven't seen? maybe? I'm just guessing...spanish english and latin aren't a very good background for trying to translate Urdu on my own.

some of my other favorites by her include "Ghazal" (by Mirza Rafi Sauda...intensely beautiful poetry...I think we should definitely study Urdu poetry in school along with shakespeare and the bible) and Allahi Allah kiya karo...(if anyone could provide a full translation of Allahi Allah also I'd be thrilled, but I won't ask for too much)

Allah hi Allah kia kero
dukh na kisi ko diya kero
jo duniya ka malik hai
naam ussi ka liya kero

Allah hi Allah Kia Kero
Allah hi Allah Kia Kero
Allah hi Allah Kia Kero

aab chehray pe jhoot sajake
bikti hai sachai

jhootay ko duniya mein
hamaisha milti hai rusvaye

sach ki raah pe chala kero.
dukh na kisi ko diya kero
jo duniya ka malik hai
naam ussi ka liya kero

Allah hi Allah Kia Kero

sheeha toot ke jur sakta hai
dil na juray ger totay

kitna hai bedard woh insaan
pyar ka gher jo lootay

aisa zulm na kia kero
dukh na kisi ko diya kero
jo duniya ka malik hai

much thanks =) and yep, that Allahi Allah is the one I was thinking about. I think it appeared in a Pakistani movie about a female Sufi saint a few decades ago, and I've seen a youtube video with a different melody from Azam Ali's version floating around out there too.

(oh, I should mention that I linked to the Allahi Allah song near the end of the first post - here it is again, though, if you'd like to listen)

http://www.last.fm/music/Niyaz/_/Allahi+Allah

I really appreciate the help! I eventually need to go to school somewhere where I can just go ahead and learn Urdu...

here is the translation of Khwaja Mir Dard's ghazal.....

tujhii ko jo yaa.N jalwaa farmaa na dekhaa
baraabar hai duniyaa ko dekhaaa na dekhaa
Only if we did not see you displaying yourself here
Equal it is whether we saw the world or not.

meraa Gu.nchaa-e-dil hai woh dil-girifataa
ke jis ko kaso ne kabhii waa na dekhaa
The bud of my heart is so love-sick
That no one ever saw it bloom!

aziat, musibat, malaamat, balaaye.n
tere ishq me.n ham ne kyaa kyaa na dekhaa
Torture, affliction, reproach, calamity
What it is that we did not face in your love

kiyaa mujh ko daaGo.n sarv-e-chiraaGaa.N
kabho tu ne aakar tamaashaa na dekhaa

Turning me into scarred display of lamps
You never came to see this display

taGaaful ne tere ye kuchh din dikhaaye
idhar tu ne lekin na dekhaa, na dekhaa
Your obliviousness has brought us to this condition
But towards here you didn't look, you didn't look!

hijaab-e-ruKh-e-yaar the aap hii ham
khulii aa.Nkh jab, koii paradaa na dekhaa
We were ourselves the veil of the face of beloved
Upon waking up, we saw no veil

shab-o-roz aye "Dard" darapaaii huu.N us ke
kaso ne jise yaa.N samajhaa na dekhaa
Around the clock, Dard, I am at following her
Whom no one ever understood or saw

I am bringing this thread up 4 years later but I was wondering if someone could translate the compound word "sarv-e-chiraghaN for me?

I looked up the Urdu dictionary and this is how it was defined:

sarv-e-chiraaghaaN : sarv ki maanind jhaaR jo mehfiloN meN raushan kiya jaata hai.

Does anybody have the English translation for it?

Thanks!

AlBinqaawi ji it means cluster of lamps

here is one shair of Khwaja Mir Dard

kiyaa mujh ko daaGo.n sarv-e-chiraaGaa.N
kabho tu ne aakar tamaashaa na dekhaa

it says.....Brandings turned me into a cluster of lamps
Never did you come to see the spectacle....

Another translation of the same is

The scars within have set me ablaze
Alas, you haven't seen this sight.

Thanks a lot Sono! I really appreciate your swift response.

So, would it mean a cluster of lamps placed on a lamp holder that is made in the shape of a sarv (Cypress tree) ? Did I get it right?

And I now see how the word "daagh" is used to allude to brandings. Nice!

beautiful song indeed adookin20 ji

ok here is the translation.....

tu ne mujh se pyar rachaya dunya se begana banaya

You made a pact of love with me and me oblivious to the world

duniya se begana banaya

Making me oblivious to the world

tere bin ab jaon kahan yon kese jiyon main

Without you where would I go now, how would I live

barkha ke lakhon teer dil par kis ko sahon main

The millions arrows of spring rain how would I take on my heart

barkha ke lakhon teer kis ko sahon main

A million arrows of spring rain how would I bear

teri yaden teri baten mere din aur meri raten

Your memory, your words, my days and my nights

mere din aur meri raten

My days and my nights

lauta do wo pal sab hi ye kis se kahon main

Return me all those moments, to whom shall I say

barkha ke lakhon teer dil par kis ko sahon main

A million arrows of spring rain how would I take on my heart

barkha ke lakhon teer kis ko sahon main

A million arrows of spring how how would I bear

Hi, thank u for this translation, it will help me a lot :b)b:
but i'd like to know if u can tell me the meaning of the two words in the end of each second "sher"/"verse" (i think they're radif's, aren't they?), the words na dekhaa . I need to do a seminar about ghazal in the next days, and i could not find a translation that help me to discover the meaning of this repeated words (na dekhaa). If was possible, and if won't annoy u, i'd like the meaning of some internal rhymes ('Kaafiyaa'), before the "sher" na dekhaa, like waa and kyaa. I know i asking too much, but it's too difficult to a Portuguese speaker see the pattern on the translation to find the words i need to talk about. Anyway, it doesn't matter if could not answer me all i ask u, or nothing that i ask u: ur translation will help me. Thank u a lot again=)

ok here is the details....

The word "na dekha" is the refrain or radif in this ghazal and "farma" "dekha" (repeated as refrain) "wa" "tamasha" etc are rhymes or qafia. Notice that it is long sound of "a" that is the rhyme. The word "dekha" means "see" "to look" "saw" "having seen" "see what" and "what is faced" depending on where it is used.
